Masters by research

What is a masters by research?

A research masters provides an opportunity to pursue a significant piece of supervised research. At QUT, a masters by research normally consists of:

  • a relevant coursework component
  • the preparation of a research hypothesis and methodology
  • the presentation of the results of the research through a Thesis.

Who should complete a masters by research?

A masters by research may be suitable if you have completed a degree and have valuable experience in the workforce. If you do not meet requirements for entry to a PhD, you may be able to upgrade your entry qualifications by commencing in a masters by research.

How long will a masters by research take?

Research masters are normally completed in 1–1.5 years full-time, and may provide an opportunity to upgrade to a PhD.
