Honours

What is honours?

An honours program provides foundation skills in designing and undertaking research. Some of QUT's four- and five-year degrees provide such a research pathway in the final year. For most three-year degrees, Honours is achieved through an additional year's study.

At QUT, an honours year normally consists of:

  • the equivalent of one semester's coursework study
  • the preparation of a research hypothesis and methodology
  • the presentation of the results of the research through a Thesis.

Who should consider an honours year?

Honours is most appropriate for recent graduates from undergraduate degrees.

What will I learn?

Deeper discipline knowledge

If you are part way through your undergraduate degree and are finding that the more you learn the more questions you have, an Honours year provides an opportunity to more deeply investigate a topic of interest.

Pathway to research

For most students, Honours provides a pathway to further higher degree research, such as a PhD. At QUT, Honours or Honours equivalence is rated highly in the selection process for higher research degrees.

Research skills

By completing your Honours at QUT you will learn about and apply research techniques, so even if you are keen to pursue a professional career, these research skills can be extremely valuable in the workplace.
